It's not every day that one comes across an athlete who exhibits the unique blend of talent, resilience, and humility that we find in Jediah Hercules, the shining shooting guard of Terror Prep, Scarborough, Ontario, Canada. More than just a promising athlete, Hercules stands out as a testament to the power of determination and self-belief.
"I think being kind is an aspect of my personality that makes me unique to others. I think being friendly and considerate is the right thing to do because I love doing unto others as I would want to be done to me," Hercules humbly reveals. This benevolence combined with his basketball prowess make him a true asset on and off the court.
Championing an ideal self who's confident, Hercules underlines the importance of mental strength in his athletic journey. "Sports, not only basketball, is a mental game, so having filtered ears is something I want to show," he asserts, highlighting his growth mindset.
His experience at Baylor University was a transformative one, revealing his deep-rooted love for community and shared faith. Recalling the impactful moment, Hercules says, "Being Christian, it really made me smile inside to see a building that large all praying together." The resilience shown by the Baylor team, even in defeat, captured his heart and cemented his admiration for the university.
Hercules carries with him a profound piece of advice that reshaped his perspective on the game. Quoting Bruce Lee, he shares, "I fear not the man who has practiced 10000 kicks 1 time, but I fear the man who has practiced 1 kick 10000 times." Emphasizing simplicity in the complex world of basketball is a wisdom he hopes to pass on to younger athletes.
Overcoming adversity has been an integral part of Hercules' journey. One defining moment was a middle school practice that taught him to be more assertive. "It really stuck with me, not in a way of hating my coach, but man, I gotta be more firm in speaking. This shaped me to speak more when I play basketball, as well as being more firm in life and not letting people push me around."
Even though he faced setbacks, including graduating without an offer, Hercules used this as fuel to improve his skills. "Playing post-grad with Terror really gave me time to improve my basketball skills...So, not being offered was a blessing in disguise," he reflects with maturity that sets him apart.
Moreover, Hercules doesn’t let his sports passion overtake his focus on academics. “Honestly, I think as a student athlete, you should put academics first because it’s not guaranteed that you make the pros, so you always need something to fall back on.”
Known for his humble demeanor and hardworking spirit, Hercules hopes to leave a memorable mark on his peers. "I would want to leave a memory on my peers that I was one of the best players/teammates they had in terms of being kind as well as a great basketball player, too."
Hercules is quick to acknowledge the influence of his coaches on his journey so far. "Definitely shout out Coach Sposato, who was my high-school coach who really trusted me and believed in me till the end... Also shout out my prep coach Menelik Fernandes. His knowledge of basketball as well as his connections this year helped me learn so much as a basketball player."
As a shooting guard, Hercules embraces the challenges and opportunities that come with his role. "I think what separates shooting guards from others is the constant off-ball movement we do with all the cuts, twist screens, etc. Also, more importantly, shooting guards shoot, a lot. I love shooting; it's one of those things I could literally do for hours."
Indeed, the journey of Jediah Hercules is a testament to the power of perseverance, humility, and self-belief. His journey serves as an inspiration for every young athlete in Scarborough and beyond, reminding us all that passion, resilience, and a strong support system can make dreams a reality.
